The Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program (EMAP) is proposing an ambitious agenda to assess the status of streams and estuaries in a 12-State area of the western United States by the end of 2003. Additionally, EMAP is proposing to access landscape conditions as they relate to stream and estuary conditions across the west. The goal of this landscape project is to develop a landscape model that can be used to identify the relative risks of streams and estuaries to potential declines due to watershed-scale, landscape conditions across the west. To do so, requires an understanding of quantitative relationships between landscape composition and pattern metrics and parameters of stream and estuary conditions. This paper describes a strategic approach for evaluating the degree to which landscape composition and pattern influence stream and estuary condition, and the development and implementation of a spatially-distributed, landscape analysis approach. 相似文献

Abstract Biosludge was obtained from a petrochemical industry’s biological wastewater treatment plant. Zinc chloride (ZnCl2) was used as a sludge activation agent during the pyrolytic process. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) image photographs, element composition, surface functional group, and pore structure were analyzed for the sludge adsorbent characteristics. Results indicated the proper ZnCl2-immersed concentration, pyrolytic temperature, and time could produce adsorbent from the bio-sludge. The optimal conditions for a larger surface area adsorbent were 3 M ZnCl2-immersed sludge pyrolyzed at 600 °C for 30 min and washed with 3 N hydrochloric acid (HCl) solution and distilled water. The predominant pore size of the sludge adsorbent was the mesopore. 相似文献

Assessing Impacts of Typhoons and the Chi-Chi Earthquake on Chenyulan Watershed Landscape Pattern in Central Taiwan Using Landscape Metrics 总被引:3,自引:1,他引:2
The Chi-Chi earthquake (ML = 7.3) occurred in the central part of Taiwan on September 21, 1999. After the earthquake, typhoons Xangsane and Toraji produced
heavy rainfall that fell across the eastern and central parts of Taiwan on November 2000 and July 2001. This study uses remote
sensing data, landscape metrics, multivariate statistical analysis, and spatial autocorrelation to assess how earthquake and
typhoons affect landscape patterns. It addresses variations of the Chenyulan watershed in Nantou County, near the earthquake’s
epicenter and crossed by Typhoon Toraji. The subsequent disturbances have gradually changed landscape of the Chenyulan watershed.
Disturbances of various types, sizes, and intensities, following various tracks, have various effects on the landscape patterns
and variations of the Chenyulan watershed. The landscape metrics that are obtained by multivariate statistical analyses showed
that the disturbances produced variously fragmented patches, interspersed with other patches and isolated from patches of
the same type across the entire Chenyulan watershed. The disturbances also affected the isolation, size, and shape-complexity
of patches at the landscape and class levels. The disturbances at the class level more strongly affected spatial variations
in the landscape as well as patterns of grasslands and bare land, than variations in the watershed farmland and forest. Moreover,
the earthquake with high magnitude was a starter to create these landscape variations in space in the Chenyulan watershed.
The cumulative impacts of the disturbances on the watershed landscape pattern had existed, especially landslides and grassland
in the study area, but were not always evident in space and time in landscape and other class levels. 相似文献

This study selected biosolids from a petrochemical waste-water treatment plant as the raw material. The sludge was immersed in 0.5-5 M of zinc chloride (ZnCl2) solutions and pyrolyzed at different temperatures and times. Results indicated that the 1-M ZnCl2-immersed biosolids pyrolyzed at 500 degrees C for 30 min could be reused and were optimal biosolid adsorbents for benzene adsorption. Pore volume distribution analysis indicated that the mesopore contributed more than the macropore and micropore in the biosolid adsorbent. The benzene adsorption capacity of the biosolid adsorbent was 65 and 55% of the G206 (granular-activated carbon) and BPL (coal-based activated carbon; Calgon, Carbon Corp.) activated carbons, respectively. Data from the adsorption and desorption cycles indicated that the benzene adsorption capacity of the biosolid adsorbent was insignificantly reduced compared with the first-run capacity of the adsorbent; therefore, the biosolid adsorbent could be reused as a commercial adsorbent, although its production cost is high. 相似文献

The molecular weight distribution and chemical composition of precursors and their relationship with disinfection by-products (DBPs) were investigated. Most of the organic matter responsible for the major DBP precursors in the Pan-Hsin water are small compounds with a molecular weight less than 1 kDa. The hydrophobic acids display the greatest ability to produce DBP. Therefore, effective removal of small molecules or hydrophobic acidic organics prior to disinfection process will significantly reduce the DBP concentration in the finished water. Although the coagulation process is effective in removing large organic precursors and the removal efficiencies of CHCl3 formation potential and organic carbon increase proportionally to the molecular weight of the precursors, the conventional treatment methods have limited efficiency in eliminating small precursors, which have high DBP formation potential. 相似文献

This study investigates the ozonation of 2-mercaptothiazoline (2-MT). The 2-MT is one of the important organic additives for the electroplating solution of the printed wiring board industry and has been widely used as a corrosion inhibitor in many industrial processes. It is of concern for the aquatic pollution control especially in the wastewaters. Semibatch ozonation experiments in the completely stirred tank reactor are performed under various concentrations of input ozone. The concentrations of 2-MT, sulfate, and ammonium are analyzed at specified time intervals to elucidate the decomposition of 2-MT during the ozonation. In addition, the time variation of the dissolved ozone concentration (C(ALb)) is continuously monitored in the course of experiments. Total organic carbon (TOC) is chosen and measured as a mineralization index of the ozonation of 2-MT. The results indicate that the decomposition of 2-MT is efficient, while the mineralization of TOC is limited via the ozonation only. Simultaneously, the yield of sulfate with the maximum value of about 47% is characterized by the increases of TOC removal and ozone consumption. These results can provide some useful information for assessing the feasibility of the treatment of 2-MT in the aqueous solution by the ozonation. 相似文献

This study characterizes the 1,4‐dioxane biodegradation potential for an in situ methane‐enhanced biostimulation field pilot study conducted at Air Force Plant 44, located south of the Tucson International Airport in Arizona. In this study, the use of methane as the primary substrate in aerobic cometabolic biodegradation of 1,4‐dioxane is evaluated using environmental molecular diagnostic tools. The findings are compared to an adjacent pilot study, wherein methane was generated via enhanced reductive dechlorination and where methane monooxygenase and methane‐oxidizing bacteria were also found to be abundant. This article also presents the use of 13C and 2H isotopic ratio enrichment, a more recent tool, to support the understanding of 1,4‐dioxane biodegradation in situ. This study is the first of its kind, although alkane gas‐enhanced biodegradation of 1,4‐dioxane has been evaluated extensively in microcosm studies and propane‐enhanced biodegradation of 1,4‐dioxane has been previously studied in the field. ©2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 相似文献

The growing incidence of oral cancer (OC) in Taiwan has become a crucial public health concern. In particular, Changhua, a
county in central Taiwan, carries persistently high OC incidence rate, with an alarmingly high male/female ratio of OC incidence.
Previous epidemiological studies had found that the incidence is spatially correlated with the level of soil content to certain
heavy metals in the central Taiwan area. Soil and the human body both intake environmental heavy metals, which can be absorbed
through various ways. The soil metal concentration is an index of possible environmental exposure to heavy metal, and the
blood metal concentration somewhat reflects the level of the exposure on the human body. Metallic carcinogen is likely to
generate free radicals and play a role in many cancers, and many studies had reported that environmental exposure to heavy
metals is an important risk factor for developing cancer. Studies on animals showed that chronic intake of chromium (Cr) could
induce OC. This study aims to explore the association between the Cr concentration in the farm soil and in the blood of OC
patients. We recruited 79 OC patients from Changhua County, with their lifestyle being adjusted in regression analysis. The
results showed that the Cr concentration in the blood of OC patients is significantly higher than the background value, and
is positively associated with the Cr concentration in the soil surrounding their residence (p-value < 0.023). Because Changhua County is only with moderate prevalence of the known OC habitual risk factors, an environmental
factor related to heavy metal Cr exposure is suspected. Future investigations may verify the causal relation between Cr and

This paper summarizes our previous and current research on genetic engineering of lignin biosynthesis for the purposes of improving wood pulping and bleaching efficiency. For these purposes, our targets were to produce transgenic trees with low content of lignin that is also chemically reactive (high lignin S/G ratio). Using aspen as a model species, we have characterized the biochemical functions of various genes and the kinetic properties of these gene products involved in monolignol biosynthetic pathway. The results of these characterizations proved strong evidence for a principle phenolic flux leading to the formation of monolignols. Biochemical evidence further demonstrated that, in this principle flux, 4CL could be the enzyme limiting total lignin accumulation, whereas CAld5H might control the lignin S/G ratio. These propositions were fully supported by the in vivo functions of these enzymes. Transgenic trees with inhibited 4CL enzyme activity exhibited 5–45% reduction in lignin contents. The chemical structure of the resulting lignin remained essentially unchanged. More importantly, the lignin reduction was compensated for by a concomitant increase in cellulose content. When antisense 4CL and sense coniferaldehyde 5-hydroxylase (CAld5H) genes were simultaneously transferred into aspen via Agrobacterium, transgenic trees expressing each one and both of the transgenes were produced. Lignin reductions up to 55% were achieved in antisense 4CL plants and up to 3-fold S/G increases were observed in sense CAld5H plants. These effects were independent but additive, with plants expressing both transgenes having less lignin and higher S/G ratio. Consistent with our previous results, lignin reduction has always resulted in an increase in cellulose content. These transgenics could be potentially valuable for pulp production. But more importantly, these benchmark transgenics are rich sources of information for functional genomics and metabolic engineering, allowing the generation of the ultimate raw materials for wood pulp production. 相似文献
